John’s Story: Staying Independent with Dementia – Thanks to a Little Help at Home
“I don’t have to go into a home. I can have my own home. Much better than being put away with other people that you don’t know.”
At Living at Home, we believe that with the right support, people living with dementia can continue to live well in the homes they love. This is John’s story.
From Business Owner to Retirement: Life with Dementia
John spent his life running a successful business. He was confident, capable and proud of his independence. But as forgetfulness began to affect his daily life, he made the difficult decision to retire.
“Towards the end I was forgetting things all the time, so I thought it was best to retire.”
Dementia changes more than memory. It can disrupt routines, relationships and a person’s sense of safety. For John, these changes were becoming part of everyday life.
The Right Support at the Right Time
That’s when Emma came into John’s life.
Emma supports John in his home in Swansea and is more than a carer. She has become a trusted companion and friend.
“She helps me throughout the day. Reminds me to take my medicine – I thought I was, but I wasn’t.”
Since Emma began supporting John with medication, hydration and nutrition, he has not had a single hospital admission due to missed doses or falls. His GP and family have both noticed improvements in his energy, stability and focus.
“Cup of tea in the morning, cup of tea in the afternoon. She’s really good.”
Practical Memory Support That Makes a Real Difference
Emma uses simple but effective strategies to help John manage daily tasks while staying as independent as possible.
Cooker Stickers for Safe Cooking
Bright stickers on cooker dials guide John when preparing meals. These visual aids help him cook with confidence and avoid confusion.
“She puts stickers everywhere. It’s crazy – how can you forget how to turn the cooker on? But she helps me remember.”
Labels on Cupboards for Kitchen Confidence
John’s cupboards are clearly labelled with both words and pictures. This helps him quickly find cups, plates and other essentials, supporting his independence in the kitchen.
A Calm, Familiar Environment
Emma ensures the home layout remains familiar and easy to navigate. Items stay in their usual places, walkways remain clear and John is encouraged to use the spaces that feel most comfortable to him. This structure reduces anxiety and helps him feel grounded.
These thoughtful adjustments do more than ensure safety. They protect John’s dignity and help him feel confident in his everyday life.
Daily Activities That Reconnect and Reassure
Emma makes sure every day includes something John enjoys. Activities are tailored to his interests and help bring joy, purpose and routine to his life.
- Jigsaw puzzles at the kitchen table help stimulate memory and create moments of calm
- Arts and crafts, such as decorating plant pots or making seasonal decorations, provide a sense of achievement
- Gardening and bird feeding give John a daily sense of purpose and keep him connected to nature
- Cooking together brings back fond memories, whether helping with soup or enjoying a roast
- Memory Choir sessions allow John to sing familiar songs from his youth, reconnecting with happy times and improving his mood
“One time she heard me singing and put some music on. Took me back to when I was 15, 16. We started dancing. She was a good dancer!”
These small but meaningful moments have helped to slow John’s cognitive decline and brought more structure and joy into his daily routine.
Rebuilding Family Connection and Confidence
Since Emma began visiting, John’s family visits have become more frequent and relaxed. The tension that once surrounded his care has been replaced with calm.
“They’re quite happy now, and they come more often. It’s because of Emma.”
Emma always involves John in decisions, whether choosing music or what to watch on television. She listens carefully and respects his preferences.
“She listens. That’s what makes her really good.”
His family have noticed a positive change in his mood, confidence and communication. He is more engaged, less anxious and noticeably happier.
Independence, Preserved
John is very clear about his wishes. He wants to stay in his own home. Thanks to Emma and the support from Living at Home, he can.
“I don’t have to go into a home. I’m looking forward to living the rest of my life here.”
What’s changed most?
“Much happier. Emma comes in almost every day. Always smiley, always kind. That’s the most important thing to me.”
